Summary: I’ll tell the fact that junior high school and high school teachers in Japan have no rest and holiday because of club activities.
Common sense of club activities in Japan.
In Japan, 99 per cent junior high and high schools have club activities, and almost all teachers have to belong to any club activities. Therefore, public school teachers in Japan think that to belong to any club activities is a kind of obligation. Each school has several club activities like football, baseball, basketball, volleyball, tennis, badminton, table tennis, track and field, art, brass band and so on. The number of days of activity varies depending on club activities. In my images, sports club like football, basketball, baseball have many days to play a week.
When do students do club activities?
Junior high and high school students usually do club activities after school. Concretely, they do them from 16:00 to 18:00. In addition, many students do club activities on Sunday, Saturday and national holiday. Moreover, games, tournaments, concerts and so on are held on Sunday, Saturday and national holiday.
In American and European school, club activities are seasonal activities. Students play ice hockey in winter, they play soccer in Autumn, they can play baseball in spring. Unlike club activities in European and American, club activities in Japan are not seasonal. Students perform club activities throughout the year.
Teachers can’t get enough extra money by club activities.
As it is written above, club activities finish at 18:00 on weekday. Eventually, students who do club activities leave school by 18:30. After students leave school, teachers can leave school, so teachers usually leave school at around 19:00 after club activities. In public school in Tokyo, the closing time for teachers is 16:45. Therefore, teachers in Japan work more than 2 hours of overtime each day.
However, teachers can’t get any overtime pay on weekday. If they work more longer at school, they can’t get any money. Only holiday which has club activities, if teachers come to school for club activities, they can get 1000 yen per 1 hour.
From long ago, many teachers protest this fact. But the actual condition doesn’t get better at all.
My situation
When I was a junior high school teacher as a newcomer, I belonged to judo club. I played soccer when I was a student, so I wanted to belong to soccer club. But newcomers have no options to select club activities to belong. I didn’t know any rules, yet I belonged to judo club.
Judo club I belonged had 5 practice days a week. Students practice Judo on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Every Saturday in the morning, I went to school for the club activity. If the tournament was held, I accompanied students for the club activity all day long.
I was not interested in Judo, so I felt pain against judo club . In particular, I don’t want to go to school on holidays. I just want to get 2 days for the rest a week. Compare money to holiday, completely I prefer holiday to money. It is just my opinion, but I believe that almost all young teachers agree with my idea.
In Japan, teacher can’t get holiday and rest. I don’t want club activities to interfere with my rest.
